Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer will play a vital role in the growing engineering team at Wasatch Photonics. Key responsibilities will include design of optical benches, housings, accessories and jigs for benchtop and handheld spectrometers, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) products, and Hyperspectral Imaging. Products will be designed to meet varied regulatory and environmental requirements including laser safety and shock and vibration.

The successful candidate will collaborate with engineers and Ph.D.-level scientists across multiple disciplines, including application engineers on spectroscopic measurements, electrical engineers on ground management and EMC, software engineers on product testing, manufacturing engineers on DFM and incoming inspection, etc.

Location: This position is based in Morrisville, North Carolina (Raleigh-Durham’s Research Triangle Park). The position is primarily on-site and in-office, although occasional work-from-home time can be scheduled. Occasional domestic and international travel may be requested.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Design of optical benches, system housings, sampling accessories and manufacturing jigs for alignment and calibration
  • Perform Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing analysis on new designs
  • Participate in mechanical design reviews of new and modified assemblies
  • Recommend appropriate selection of materials and manufacturing technologies
  • Maintain drawing documentation, analyses and reports per ISO Quality Management process
  • Communicate with multi-disciplinary teams and interact with technical experts in optics and electronics

Required Experience

  • 10yrs experience in mechanical design using SolidWorks or other CAD tools
  • Experience in optical systems including mounting and tolerancing of optical elements including lenses and fibers
  • Experience creating assembly models, assembly drawings and bills of materials (BOMs)
  • Experience with Product Data Management (PDM) and Engineering Change Management (ECNs)
  • Experience releasing precision assemblies to production manufacturing with appropriate Work Instructions

Preferred Experience

  • Experience developing and releasing medical devices
  • Optical modeling in Zemax
  • Design of Experiment (DoE) and Design Validation Testing (DVT) to ensure first-articles meet system requirements
  • Experience translating customer / user requirements into system design requirements
  • Regulatory compliance and safety testing including MILSTD 810 shock and vibration
  • Use of Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) tools, specifically Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT) for design validation

Education/Skills

  • BS/MS or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering or related field
  • Strong communication skills and positive attitude to collaborate across engineering, manufacturing and business teams to achieve performance metrics, project milestones and customer satisfaction
  • Strong organization skills and ability to generate internal and customer-facing written documentation
  • Self-motivated to work on multiple development projects simultaneously
