Electrical Hardware / Firmware Design Engineer

The Electrical Hardware / Firmware Design Engineer position in our Morrisville, NC manufacturing center will play a key role in designing electronics for sensor and laser control toward high-volume integration into medical and research devices. The successful candidate will lead the design and programming of Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBAs) from component selection and schematic design to microcontroller C. (Advanced PCB routing / layout skills are not required.)

The engineer will collaborate with engineers and Ph.D.-level scientists across multiple disciplines, including electrical engineers on power and analog design, FPGA engineers on digital design, software engineers on automated testing and bring-up, opto-mechanical engineers on fit and thermal management, manufacturing engineers on DFM and incoming inspection, etc.

Location: This position is based in Morrisville, North Carolina (Raleigh-Durham’s Research Triangle Park). The position is primarily on-site and in-office, although occasional work-from-home time can be scheduled. Occasional domestic and international travel may be requested.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Design low-complexity mixed-signal circuitry for digital and analog control and communications
  • Develop and maintain microcontroller firmware in C for chips including STM32H7 (STM32CubeIDE), Laird BL652 / Nordic nRF52, Cypress FX2 (SDCC, Keil) etc
  • Follow robust configuration management / revision-control practices
  • Maintain relevant engineering documentation, including PCB drawings, firmware API, and Theory of Operation for system architectures

Required Experience

  • Bare-metal microcontroller firmware using C/C++
  • PCB design with schematic capture and board layout (multi-layer SMT, Altium strongly preferred)
  • Familiarity with electrical test equipment including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers etc
  • Experience following engineering processes and procedures

Preferred Experience

  • Device communication protocols such as USB and BLE
  • Component communication protocols such as I2C and SPI
  • Revision control with Git (GitHub, BitBucket etc)
  • Experience with scripting languages such as Python or R

Education / Skills

  • BS/MS or higher in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or relevant fields
  • Strong communication skills and positive attitude to work with engineering, manufacturing, and business teams towards success of products
  • Strong organizational skills and capability of generating necessary written documentation
