WP Announces Holographic Grating Patent

Logan, Utah, USA – June 15, 2004

Wasatch Photonics, Inc., a leading designer and manufacturer of advanced holographic optics for the optical networking, defense, test & measurement, and medical industries, today announced the United States Patent and Trademark Office granted co-founder Dr. LeRoy Dickson a patent for Advanced Holographic Gratings. Wasatch Photonics has an exclusive license to the patent.

United States Patent # 6,750,995 is entitled “Enhanced Volume Phase Grating with High Dispersion, High Diffraction Efficiency and Low Polarization Sensitivity”. These holographic grating components are used to split light into its individual wavelengths enabling high-performance telecommunication, medical, defense, and laser devices. The patent covers variations of the E-VPG concept, including those using prisms. Wasatch Photonics designs, manufactures, and markets these advanced holographic optics under the names Dickson Gratings® and E-VPGs.

Gerald Heidt, CEO, stated “This is the first of many state-of-the-art holographic technologies Wasatch Photonics will be offering. We plan to build a portfolio of patents related to Dickson Gratings® and enhanced holographic technologies to leverage our unique design and manufacturing capabilities”.

Dickson, while at IBM in the 1970s, designed and commercialized the original holographic scanning disks used in supermarket barcode scanners with Richard Rallison, another Wasatch Photonics co-founder. Dickson has more than 60 patents in the field of holography.

“Dickson Gratings® combine high efficiencies and polarization insensitivity with high angular dispersion making them ideal for a broad range of next-generation applications” said Dan Cifelli, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “They are easily integrated into engineering designs thereby reducing overall product cost and size while increasing product performance and versatility”.

All products are produced in-house using proprietary techniques and a dichromated gelatin recording medium. Dickson Gratings® are sealed with glass on both sides resulting in rugged, scratch-resistant, easily handled products for the customer.
