Director/VP Engineering

Wasatch Photonics is seeking a Director or VP of Engineering (commensurate with experience) to oversee development and support of multiple product lines of electro-optical sensing systems for spectroscopy and optical coherence tomography. The position will lead and grow a team of electrical, mechanical, optical and software engineers in interdisciplinary system design projects spanning prototype, first article characterization and volume production for both standard product lines and OEM design wins. This role of technical leadership is ideal for an innovative, motivated individual with a passion for new product design, as it offers the opportunity to interface with industry leaders in the creation of detection solutions for next-generation commercial products across a wide range of application areas.

Location: This position will be based in Durham, NC. Occasional domestic and international travel may be required.

Responsibilities

As head of Engineering, the position will be responsible for meeting committed deadlines and achieving technical performance metrics on development of Wasatch’s core spectroscopy and OCT products and OEM customer systems.

Within Engineering, the position will include functional team management, hiring, and the professional development of staff.  . The position will own the configuration management and release process for completed mechanical parts and drawings, electrical schematics and layouts, and firmware and software artifacts. This function will be responsible for all aspects of engineering project management – deliverables, timelines, costs, and outcomes. Wasatch Photonics’ business includes both standard products for sale to end users in research, as well as an active and growing OEM business component. As such, the candidate will be required to balance both long-term, internal goals with the rapid pace of OEM development projects.

Externally the position will work closely with Operations manufacturing engineers and line technicians on production BOMs and work instructions to ensure systems are designed for efficient assembly, alignment, calibration and QC, recommending tools and procedures as appropriate.  The position will also work closely with Marketing and Sales proposal teams to review and approve customer requirements, manpower estimates and development schedules.

Preferred Experience

Top candidates will have degrees in engineering, optics or the sciences and demonstrated experience in team leadership or management. Priority will be given to candidates with specific expertise in electronics, optical systems or spectroscopy. Experience with management of OEM product development projects is a plus.

Education / Skills

  • BS/MS or higher in EE, ME, Optics or relevant fields.
  • Proven leadership role in new product development for commercial or scientific products.
  • Strong communication skills and positive attitude to work with interdisciplinary teams across the company with a focus on customer success.
  • Interest and willingness to “dive deep” into the photonics world of gratings, detectors, lasers and optics.
